MA Admissions
Prospective students to the Master of Arts Program in Latin American
Studies must apply to the program through either the Division of the Social Sciences or through the Division of the Humanities, depending on their primary disciplinary orientation. Once admitted, the Division through
which a student is admitted has no impact on the curriculum, course
registration, or faculty advising. Graduating students will receive the
degree from the division through which they have been admitted.
Information on how to apply
The application process for admission and financial aid is administered
through the divisional Office of the Dean of Students. The Application
for Admission and Financial Aid, with instructions, deadlines and
department-specific information, is available at
www.uchicago.edu/admissions (select the corresponding tab for that division through which you plan to apply, either Humanities or Social Sciences). Questions pertaining to admissions and aid should be directed to the appropriate Office of the Dean of Students.
Supplementary Material
In addition to the online application, applicants are required to submit
a writing sample of 10-20 pages. Writing samples should be academic in
nature, and should demonstrate the candidate's research and writing skills.
The writing sample must have a cover sheet with your full name, the type of writing sample submitted, and the text "Applicant to the Master of Arts in Latin American Studies".
The paper should be closely related to Latin American Studies. The paper can be one submitted for a grade in a class, a degree paper, or a publication such as a magazine feature or journal article. The writing sample should not be a paper written specifically for your application. If your submitted item is a collaborative work, all writers’ names should be included with your name highlighted.
The writing sample may be in English or in Spanish, and should be printed on paper and have no binding of any sort. It should be printed on both sides of the pages. Any writing samples submitted on cassette tape, DVD, CD or media other than paper will be discarded. Writing samples must be mailed or sent by a courier service. We do not accept faxed copies or email attachments.
All correspondence and materials sent in support of applications should
sent directly to the appropriate Office of the Dean of Students.
